Oppy's Corner!

Welcome to my little corner of the web! I am Oppenheimer O. Cohne, a lifelong resident of the city of Baltimore! Here you'll find a changing collection of material related to the construction and maintenance of Evergreen Commons, and I'll be posting other stuff, too, so check back often! (here's a handy link back to the main page)

History

The picture below is the earliest known image of the Carriage House and Meadow behind Evergreen! If you look closely, you can see a small structure in the Meadow, near the bridge: Evergreen Homes, at the current site of Evergreen Commons!

In the 1960s, this building is rumored to have been torn down as part of an ambitious proposed walkway project. Typical of the large egos and grandiose plans from this era, this walkway would have cut the Evergreen Meadow in half, crippling this historic community, and causing economic devastation. Luckily, opposition to the "Walkway to NoWhere" was outspoken, and the project was never completed.

Later, another project for the Meadow was proposed, an urban park on the site of the Friendship Garden, a historically affluent section of the Meadow. Due to historic preservation concerns, this project remained unbuilt, as well!

Later still, a new project was constructed, on the site of the now-vanished Evergreen Homes. This more sensitive design was able to integrate itself with the historic brick path, the only remaining trace of Evergreen Homes.

Today, there are those who say that Evergreen Commons is interfering with the local wildlife, and negatively impacting turtle migration routes! Just goes to show that you can't please everyone! Evergreen Commons may have had a turbulent history, and it may suffer from maintenance issues, but it is a vital asset to the diverse communities that use it, and we hope that it will remain so in the future, for months to come!
